Mrs. Cora Owens was born on August 17th, 1928 in Ypsilanti Michigan to Charles and Consuela Mills. Mr. Mills was a traveling evangelist and would often go from city to city to different churches to preach the word of God, at times Cora was allowed to travel with her parents to various tent meetings, revivals and churches. She enjoyed the church environment and at an early age she was baptized. At the age of six years old, Cora learned to read music and play the piano. She would often sing and play at the various church services she attended. One of her favorite songs to sing during her childhood years was “This Little Light of Mine” her father continued this lifestyle until he was called away to serve his country in WW II from which he was killed in action and never returned. Cora’sfamily moved to st louis Missouri where she lived until she graduated from Beaumont high school. She met Marion Owens and was married soon after she graduated. The newlyweds moved to south st louis where cora worked at the Eat Well Café for several years and Marion worked for Scullin Steele Co. Coranever lost her desire to continue in the church, she moved to Rock Hill Missouri in the early sixties and was the pianist for First Baptist Church in Valley Park, Missouri under the pastorage of Reverend Benny Catlin until his passing. She then moved to Webster Groves, Missouri and joined Old Community Baptist Church where she played the piano and was a long-time member until her passing on August 18th, 2019. She leaves behind her three surviving children Mrs. Mary Jones of Chesterfield Missouri, Mrs. Elizabeth Gherardini of Collinsville Illinois, Mr. Kenneth Owens of Kirkwood Missouri, a sister Nadeen Robinson of Jefferson City Missouri, 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, a host of extended family, and friends. Cora was a blessing, a light, and a friend to many and she will be greatly missed.
