Mrs. Edna Sarah Darden was born March 13, 1929 in New York to the union of Douglas and Edna Burrell. From the day she was born, Edna was lovingly known as “Bootsie.” She was the eldest of four children. Her brothers, Douglas Dallas and Reginald Roland, and sister, Joyce Juanita all preceded her in death. Edna was educated in the New York City Public School system and graduated from Seward Park High School in 1947.
When Edna was 19, her mother married Clarence Campbell. As their stepfather, he was an integral part of all of their lives and the beloved grandfather of all their children.
In 1947 she married Wilfred Woolridge. Together they had three children from this union: David Edward, Michael Wilfred who preceded her in death, and Gwendolyn Marie. In 1972 she married Alton L. Darden who preceded her in death. One child was born to this union, Alton L. Darden, Jr.
After divorcing her first husband, Bootsie worked as a “barmaid” to support her three, small children. As a proud, smart young woman with aspirations of a better life for her family, Edna secured a position working in the Department of Finance for the State of New York. Throughout her life she worked in various positions.
She relocated to St. Louis, Missouri in 1984 with Al and Alton which became their home. In her late fifties, Edna learned to drive and returned to school to become a nurse. She worked as a licensed practical nurse in several nursing homes throughout the St. Louis Metro area where her patients and staff adored her. Her creativity was evident in her ability to cook, sew and draw. She loved to dance and loved music!
Mrs. Edna Sarah Darden, affectionately known as “Big Momma,” transitioned from this life on November 10, 2019.
