Darwin Prince Hanks was born on July 4, 1955 in St. Louis, MO to Edward and Everteen Hanks. Darwin is preceded in death by his father Edward, brother Edward Jr., mother Everteen, sisters Exie Lee French and Wanda Dickerson. Darwin’s early education was obtained Catholic schools and he graduated from William Beaumont Highschool in St. Louis, MO.
Darwin joined the United States Army and married Gale Henry to that union his only child Erica Renee Hanks was born. Darwin’s service in the Army sent him to Heidelberg, Germany; Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX; Manheim, Germany; Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, VA; Korea; Newburgh, NY; Schofield Barracks, HI; and Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, NC. Darwin loved to cook and always invited soldiers from the barracks home to join use for holiday meals. He believed in looking out for fellow soldiers. Darwin retired from the Army after 26 years of service with the rank of Master Sargent (MSG). He was a proud and dedicated soldier.
Upon retiring from the Army, Darwin settled in Charlotte, NC, where Darwin started a second career with the Charlotte Mecklinburg Schools (CMS) as a Transportation Technician for more than 16 years until his health failed in recent years. Darwin was known to his coworkers by his wonderful smile and kindness to everyone. Darwin organized many food drives for the local community. He was affectionately called “Papa D”.
After a long illness Darwin departed this life on April 8, 2021 in the comfort of his Charlotte, NC home. He will never be forgotten and will always be loved. Darwin leaves to cherish his memories Gale Hanks, his wife, Erica Hanks, his daughter; eight sisters Edween Hanks; Jeraldine Lee, Caroline Hanks-Jones; Edna Hanks-Pipes; Virginia Hanks; Diana Hasan; Helen Washington (Ricky); Lynda Webster (Ronald); three brothers Eddie Hanks, Derrick Hanks, and Henry Hanks (Sabrina). A host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces. Phillip Martin a dear high school friend.
