Mavis M. Hughes, beloved mother, sister, educator, and devoted servant of God, peacefully transitioned on June 29, 2025, at Wellstar Hospice, Tranquility at Cobb in Austell, Georgia, at the age of 82.
Born on June 20, 1943, in Forrest City, Arkansas, to Pete and Lola Johnson, Mavis was the fourth of five siblings. She was preceded in death by her siblings Marvia Greene, Bobby Johnson, and Billy Johnson. She is survived by her loving brother, James Johnson of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Mavis married the love of her life, Carl (Charles) E. Hughes, Sr., on December 23, 1965. Together, they built a life of love, faith, and family. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl and their two sons, Carl E. Hughes, Jr. and Corey E. Hughes.
Mavis earned her degree from Arkansas A.M.& N. College in Pine Bluff in 1965. Soon after, she moved to Berkeley, Missouri, and began her long and impactful career as an educator at Kinloch High School. Her dedication to teaching spanned over four decades, during which she inspired countless students in academics, crafting, home economics, and life.
Mavis was not only a gifted Educator but also a passionate Evangelist. She was an active and cherished member of Greater Grace Church in St. Louis, Missouri. Her love for the Word of God was evident in her heartfelt Sunday School lessons and in the way she lived her life—with grace, kindness, and unwavering faith.
A talented seamstress and craftswoman, Mavis found great joy in sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She often blessed her family and friends with handmade gifts stitched with love. Her voice carried the sweet sounds of gospel hymns, which she joyfully sang both in church and at home.
In 2023, Mavis relocated to Austell, Georgia, to be with her son Corey, where she spent her final year surrounded by love and care.
Mavis leaves to cherish her memory her brother, James Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and stepchildren; as well as many former students, church members, and friends who were touched by her wisdom, warmth, and unwavering faith.
Her life was a testament to the power of love, education, and service to others. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
