With hearts full of gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the peaceful transition of Mrs. Ora Mae Smith, affectionately known as Granny, Granny Ms. Smith, or simply Ms. Smith, who departed this life on May 16, 2025, at the blessed age of 99.
Ora Mae Smith was born on March 9, 1926, in New Hebron, Mississippi, to the late Ora and Doreatha Lewis. She received her early education in the New Hebron School District and later made her home in St. Louis, Missouri, where she raised her family and became a beloved figure in her community.
A devoted mother of eight, she was preceded in death by her husband A.C. Smith and six of her children: Earl Lee Payne, Albert Charles “Pig” Smith, James A. “Jambo” Smith, Flossie M. Robinson, Louise Loveberry, and Bonnie Ree Smith-Wayne. She now reunites with them in eternal peace.
Mrs. Smith was a cook by trade and shared her talents generously with the community. She worked at the Texas Lady Lounge and faithfully volunteered in the kitchen at St. Augustine Catholic Church, where she was a proud parishioner for over 50 years. Having received her Catholic confirmation from Father Bob Gettinger, her faith and service were deeply woven into her life.
Known for her fierce love and unshakable honesty, Ms. Ora’s kitchen was a sanctuary for many—a place where she fed souls with food and kindness alike. Whether you were family, friend, or stranger, she welcomed you with warmth, tough love, and if needed, a few dollars from her purse. She said what she said—and meant it.
She leaves to cherish her legacy: her loving daughter Ella Smith-Brown (Dannis), her devoted son Don L. Smith, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will continue to carry her spirit forward.
