Robert Earl Harris Jr. was born September 1, 1946 to the union of Robert Earl Harris Sr. and Thelma Harris in St. Louis, Mo. He was the 2nd born of four children. Both parents and one sister, Gloria Jean Keely, preceded him in death.
Robert, affectionally called “Bobby” by close family and friends, attended and graduated from Charles Sumner High School with his sister, Rosemary Harris, in 1965, where he part of the Cross Country track team. After obtaining his High School diploma, he was drafted into the US Army in January of 1968, where he fought in Vietnam War. He received numerous medals, including the sharpshooter designation, before receiving an honorable discharge in January of 1972.
In 1967, Robert was united in Holy Matrimony to Judy Mae Day. To this union, five children were born, three girls and two boys. In 1994, he later married Glenda Redmond, who preceded him in death and no children were born to this union.
Robert professed a hope in Christ at an early age serving many years at Midwestern Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend C. B. Moore. Under this leadership, he served as the Superintendent of Sunday School, member of the Deacon board, and sang in the Men’s and Mass Choir. He was often requested to sing “I’m Free” for the congregation at large. Prior to his death, he attended Salt Covenant Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Chaz Jaquess, where he also served on the Deacon board before he became ill.
Robert was a faithful employee of the St. Louis Art Museum for more than twenty years before retiring. He served as one of the Block Captains for the City of Greendale. He had a passion for fishing, bowling (earning several trophies), cooking (seven-cheese macaroni, meatloaf, and sweet tea), and telling jokes along with his Vietnam war tales.
