Sandra Jean “Sandy” Harrell (Harden) was born on May 11, 1940 in St. Louis, MO to James Malcolm and Mary Magdalene Harden (Tilghman) who preceded her in death.
Sandy was baptized and attended Macedonia House of Prayer under the leadership of Rev. Lucille Seals her grandmother.
Sandy attended Curtis Elementary and she graduated in 1954. She attended Vashon High School in 1954 and later was transferred to Central High School due to integration in 1956 and graduated in 1957.
On September 23, 1961 Sandy committed to a lifetime love and partnership in ceremony of marriage to Jerry “Jack” Harrell (preceded her in death), a loving and supportive husband and father of 41 years. To this union two children were born, Andrea Janine and Jerri Patrice.
Later in life Sandy affirmed her faith on October 4, 1981 she joined and was baptized at Prospect Hill M. B. Church under the leadership of Rev. Andrian F. Jones. Upon Rev. Jones’ passing, Rev. Darian Jael Jones became her pastor. She was in the Choral Club, Combined Voices, Berean District Choir, Hope Ministry and on the Repast Committee.
Sandy was an original “Ikette” singer for Ike and Tina Turner, also an “Olivette” with Oliver Saine. Sandy worked for EFNEP (The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program), and the 4-H Club (providing kids with community, mentors, and learning opportunities) for many years. She was also a long time employee for Walgreens until she retired.
Sandy was well known for sewing and making uniforms for church concerts, her famous wrap bracelets, doily’s, and her cooking. She had an impact on everyone’s life. She was a firecracker and kept it short and blunt without hesitation.
Sandy was very outgoing and loving until she transitioned from labor to refreshment on Thursday September 22, 2022. She was preceded in death by her siblings, James “Boy” Harden and Marlene Harris; nephew, Christopher “Poncho” Jones; bonus son, Mark Penny; God-daughter, Lisa Scales; special sisters, Marilyn Saunders and Brenda Coleman; and special friend, Janice Mims.
