JoAnn was born on August 29, 1953 in St. Louis, MO to Melvin and Lula Mae Howard. She was the 2nd oldest of eight children. JoAnn’s parents, sisters Diane and Nadine, brothers Johnny and Michael, and daughter-in-law Dawn preceded her in death.
JoAnn confessed her love for Christ at a young age. She was baptized at Mt. Zion M.B. Church under the leadership of the late Reverend J.M. Baker. In 1985, she moved to Burlington, Iowa and she united with Greater Hope M.B Church under the leadership of late Reverend Robinson where she served as the announcement clerk. In November 2005, JoAnn moved back to St. Louis, MO and reunited with her Mt. Zion family under the leadership Reverend Sammie E. Jones.
JoAnn married J.B. Tate Jr. in 1972. From that union, JoAnn had two children Sheronda and Jarrard. JoAnn enjoyed spending time with family, baking, reading and helping those in need. She took in her sister Nadine’s children: (DeAndre, Aneesah and Sharmeenah) and raise them as her own. JoAnn is a SLPS graduate. She continued her education by getting her CNA license in 1982, her AAS degree in Accounting from Southeastern Community College in 1993.
JoAnn departed this life on Monday October 18, 2021 at SLU Hospital.
She leaves to cherish her memory: five children Sheronda (Calvin) Sturgis, Jarrard Tate, DeAndre Howard Sr., Aneesah Howard, Sharmeenah Howard, 5 grandchildren (Tierinee, Khalyl, Sherodd, Jozlyn and Calii’), 6 grandnieces/nephews (Kaneciah, Kiarra, DeAndre Jr., Aubrey, Kennedi and Malakhi), 3 sisters (Barbara (James) Tabron, Patricia Howard and Renee (Melvin) Bullock), a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
