Patricia Ann Kelly, affectionately known as “PK,” was born on February 26, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late James Barnett Kelly and Ruth Curb. Patricia’s early education took place at Cole Elementary, followed by her graduation from Soldan High School in 1963. After high school, Patricia defied the odds when she was accepted into the Jewish School of Nursing, one of only two Black students admitted each year at the time. She completed her nursing program in 1965, launching what would be a lifelong and fulfilling career in healthcare. Later, she continued her education at the College of St. Francis, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in 1988, furthering her commitment to serving others.
From 1979 to 2001, Patricia worked as a dedicated nurse at St. Louis Hospital, where she made a lasting impact on her patients and colleagues. In addition, she also proudly served in the 21st General Hospital, U.S. Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, contributing over 20 years to her country’s military efforts. In 1990, she was mobilized during the Gulf War for active duty in Louisiana to replace nurses sent to the Middle East.
A lifelong member of Lane Tabernacle CME Church, Patricia devoted over 60 years to her faith community. She was an active participant in the church’s Feed the Hungry program and the Health Ministry until health challenges made it difficult for her to continue.
Outside of her professional and church life, Patricia was an avid crocheter, loved to decorate her house for Christmas, as well as participate in Ms. Ellie’s Line Dance class. She was a woman of many passions, including shopping, watching her favorite westerns and crime shows, and traveling. Even though her life changed after a significant surgery in October of 2014, Patricia remained a strong presence in the lives of those she loved, often taking on the role of “boss” to her grown children.
On February 14, 2026, Patricia peacefully transitioned from this life to her eternal reward, surrounded by the love and comfort of her home. She leaves to cherish her memory of her son, Keith (Cheryl); daughter, Shawn; grandson, Clifton; as well as a host of family, friends, and special loved ones, including Artis Porter and Jeanette McNutt, whose endless friendships, care, and support carried her throughout her life.
Patricia’s light will continue to shine through the lives she touched, and though she will be dearly missed, her legacy of love, service, and faith will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
